Different Glass on a Vehicle

The Mohs scale is a scale used to measure the hardness of glass. It ranges from One (softest) to Ten (hardest). Windshields some doors and some roof glass is made from a type of glass called laminated glass, which is composed of two layers of glass with a plastic (laminate) layer in between. Laminated glass is designed to be shatter-resistant. This type of glass has a hardness of 5.5 on the Mohs scale. Most other glass, doors back windows, etc., on a vehicle is made from a type of glass called tempered glass. Tempered glass typically has a similar hardness rating range of 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale – considered to be relatively soft. Tempered glass will shatter when broken.

The strength of bulletproof glass depends on the types of glass used and the thickness of the glass. Generally, bulletproof glass is made from a combination of two or more types of glass, such as laminated polycarbonate or acrylic glass, and is usually between 3 and 10 inches thick. This type of glass is designed to be strong enough to withstand multiple impacts from high-velocity projectiles, such as bullets.
